Trends can be tricky. Most of us wouldn’t want a pair of bell-bottoms in our closets, much less framed over the couch in our living rooms. To ensure your art keeps its style — and stamina — make sure it’s partly about the times, but mostly about you.
Transportation-as-art is big right now (see our Bicycle silhouette) and it’s popping up everywhere (“Beep Beep” pillow from CB2, Mark Ovenden’s Transit Maps of the World at Anthropologie, for example). But instead of just buying one of the 1,000 prints sold of time-lapsed taxis on the streets of New York, pop art-ize an old bus route map from your hometown, blow up a picture of the teal Schwinn with the banana seat you wore out riding to swim practice everyday for three summers, or frame one of the wonderful tube art posters from the London Transit Museum you bought while studying abroad.
Making your art your own means that being on-trend can always be stylish, and the investment you make in your art is also an investment in yourself.
